- Marriage
b. Must be within the tzaddikim (Numbers 36:6; cp 2 Corinthians 6:14)
c. Polygamy forbidden (1 Corinthians 7:2; 1 Timothy 3:2)
d. Marriage must be according to Yahweh's laws. (Deuteronomy 24:1)
e. A bridegroom is to rejoice with his bride. Do not force a bridegroom to perform military service during the first year of his marriage. (Deuteronomy 20:7; 24:5)
f. A man who violates a virgin must pay the bride price, marry her if her father permits, and may never divorce her. (Deuteronomy 22:29)
g. The Elders must judge in a case of premarital promiscuity. (Deuteronomy 22:13-15)
h. A woman's father may utterly refuse to give his daughter to a man even though he pays the bride price. (Exodus 22:16-17)
i. The female captive must be treated in accordance with special regulations concerning repentance and conversion. (Deuteronomy 21:11-14)
j. Divorce can be allowed for the cause of premarital fornication. (Deuteronomy 24:1-4) Mahleh (see Matthew 19:7-8)
k. Marriage is forbidden with:
i. Stepmother (Leviticus 18:8; 20:11; 1 Corinthians 5:1)
ii. Non-believers (Exodus 34:13-17; Deuteronomy 7:1-3; Numbers 36:6; 2 Corinthians 6:14)
iii. Sister (Leviticus 20:17)
iv. Aunt (Leviticus 20:19)
v. Grandchild (Leviticus 18:10)
vi. Daughter-in-law (Leviticus 18:15)
2. Divorce (Leviticus 21:7; 22:13; Isaiah 50:1; 1 Corinthians 7:10-11)
a. Not to remarry someone once they have remarried and divorced a second partner (Deuteronomy 24:1-4)
b. For committing adultery (Jeremiah 3:8; Matthew 19:3-9; Mark 10:2-12; Luke 16:18)
c. For abandonment (1 Corinthians 7:10-14)
d. In some cases for abuse or failure to provide. This is shikul ha da’at. For a full treatment see the Responsa on “Divorce and Remarriage”.
3. Parents
a. Father has authority over the child (Numbers 30:3-5)
b. The Father is to be strongly involved in the selection of a marriage partner (Genesis 24:2-8)
c. Children are to be regarded as a gift of God (Genesis 33:5; 48:9; Joshua 24:3)
d. The parents are to educate (Deuteronomy 21:18-21; Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4)The parents are to discipline (Deuteronomy 21:18-21; Proverbs 22:15)
4. Children
a. Children are to honor their parents (Genesis 9:22; Exodus 20:12; 21:15; Matthew 15:4; 19:19; Mark 7:10; 10:19; Luke 18:20; Ephesians 6:1-2; Colossians 3:20; 1 John 5:2)
b. The penalty for children who dishonor their parents (Leviticus 20:9; Deuteronomy 21:18-21)
c. Show honor and respect for the elderly. (Leviticus 19:32)
