Justice, the role of in Halakha
Injustice in any form is wrong. (Luke 16:10)
It is a sure sign of a nation's internal rot when the law is ignored, justice is not upheld and wrong judgments are regularly rendered. (Habakkuk 1:4)
We are to take great pains to be honest and just. (Exodus 23:7)
We are to distinguish between right and wrong and are to condemn any attempt to redefine these. (Isaiah 5:20)
We are to personally act in a just manner and to publicly pursue justice. (Deuteronomy 16:20; Proverbs 21:3; Isaiah 56:1; Micah 6:8; Philippians 4:8)
We are to have solid, honest standards in everything we do. (Leviticus 19:35-36; Psalm 82:2)
We must seek good and not evil, hate evil and love good thus establishing justice in our courts. (Amos 5:14-15)
There is a special blessing on those who maintain justice. (Psalm 106:3)
Do not twist, distort or pervert justice. (Deuteronomy 16:19)
Doing so is an abomination and will incur the wrath of God. (Psalm 82:2; Proverbs 17:15; 18:5; 20:10; 24:24-25; 29:27; Lamentations 3:35-36; Micah 3:9)
Do not allow following the letter of the law to end up meaning that justice is not done. (Leviticus 19:15, 35; Deuteronomy 16:20; Jeremiah 22:3)
We are to ensure that foreigners, outsiders, widows, orphans or the generally oppressed find justice within our courts. (Exodus 22:21-23; 23:6; Deuteronomy 24:17; 27:19; Psalm 10:18; 82:2-4; Proverbs 29:4; 31:9; Isaiah 1:17; 10:1-2; Jeremiah 22:3)
Allow no partiality, whether to the poor or the rich, small or great. (Exodus 23:3; Leviticus 19:15; Deuteronomy 16:19; 2 Chronicles 19:7; Proverbs 28:21)
Those who violate justice are to be quickly dealt with. (Proverbs 11:7; Ezra 7:26; Jeremiah 21:12; Amos 5:11-12)
