                                                                                                                                                        Sefirat HaOmer – Counting of the Omer

                                                                                                                                                        Mood: Festive

                                                                                                                                                        Background: The 49 days of the Omer correspond both to the time between physical emancipation from Egypt and the spiritual liberation of the giving of the Torah at the foot of Mount Sinai on Shavuot, as well as the time between the barley harvest and the wheat harvest in ancient Israel.

                                                                                                                                                        For Adonaists, Sefirat HaOmer goes way beyond agricultural significance. It points us to the Lord’s resurrection. As the omer was lifted up by the High Priest in the Old Covenant, so the Lord was lifted up for us during this season.

                                                                                                                                                        The Master Himself drew the comparison when He said,
                                                                                                                                                        • John 12:32 HCSB  As for Me, if I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all people to Myself."

                                                                                                                                                        Practice: Each day the father acknowledges the passing of time and the coming of Shavuot by praying a special prayer. He may first recite a blessing, then count the appropriate number for that evening, then pray that they Holy Temple service be begun again soon (implying that we wish the Messiah be among us again soon).

                                                                                                                                                        So, for example he may begin with

                                                                                                                                                        “Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us by your commandments and commanded us to be a light to the nations and has given us Yeshua our Messiah, the light of the world.

                                                                                                                                                        It is the ____day of the Omer.”  

                                                                                                                                                        Biblical Support: The origins of the Omer count are found in the Torah itself, in Leviticus 23:15-16, which states that it is a commandment to count seven complete weeks from the day after Passover night ending with the festival of Shavuot on the fiftieth day.
