Witnesses
Do not bear false witness or give a false report. (Exodus 20:16; 23:1; Deuteronomy 5:20; Luke 3:14; 18:20)
A truthful testimony may save lives, therefore we understand that giving a false testimony may be understood as an attack on a person's life. (Leviticus 19:16; Proverbs 14:5, 25; Zechariah 8:17)
We should seek multiple witnesses to verify what is being told. (Numbers 35:30; Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15; Matthew 18:16; John 8:17; 2 Corinthians 13:1; 1 Timothy 5:19; Hebrews 10:28)
We should seek corroborating evidence. (Exodus 22:13; Deuteronomy 22:15, 17, 20)
We must turn away from anyone who decides to be a false witness. (Exodus 23:1)
It doesn't matter if an entire crowd is doing it, we must stand against the crowd for the sake of justice. (Exodus 23:2)
False testimony is a an abomination to the Lord. ((Proverbs 6:16, 19; 12:17; 25:18; Jeremiah 7:9-10)
We should be very careful of baseless accusations. (Proverbs 24:28)
False witnesses are to be disciplined. Depending on the possible consequences of what may have happened to the one they were falsely accusing, perjury may carry a penalty of death. (Proverbs 19:5, 9; 21:28; Zechariah 5:3-4)
False witnesses should receive the punishment that the falsely accused would have received had he been found guilty. (Deuteronomy 19:18-19)
Worthless witnesses mock justice and should be appropriately condemned and disciplined. (Proverbs 19:28-29)
Silence, or "pleading the 5th" is not a biblical option. If a person has seen, heard, or known about something he has witnessed, and does not respond to a public call to testify, he is guilty. (Leviticus 5:1)
If the dayanim are presented with conflicting testimonies, they must make a careful investigation to determine who is the false witness and act accordingly. (Deuteronomy 19:16-18)
